Demographers and researchers in related disciplines are increasingly turning their attention to the study of kinship structures beyond the nuclear family and co-resident kin. This ‘kinship demography’ is deeply rooted in the literature of demography, sociology, anthropology, and other disciplines. Recent advances underline the potential to unify concepts, methods, and applications across these fields. Yet, some questions remain unanswered: How does the demography of kinship fit within the wider discipline and what is its relationship to family demography? Does it have a distinct research agenda and what are its current objectives? What obstacles must be overcome for it to generate policy-relevant insights and establish itself as a sub-discipline in the field? In this session, a group of experts will present their perspectives on the current state of kinship demography
